Recently, my role play character took a turn for the worse.  My character is having an identity crisis as the one host splits into two hosts; the original host Salvatore and another more sinister and much darker host Sindee.  Sindee is the part of Salvatore that spent most of the time as Jyorogumo, the Oni spider demon, in Japan.  It is why she speaks Japanese.  At times when she is present, she will start speaking in Japanese whatever it is she wants to say.  If you are a Japanese speaker you will understand what she is saying because it is not gibberish but real sentences and words. Last night, a friend asked me a very good question about getting into character.  She explained that she had a tendency to get too attached to her avatars and felt that if something happened In Character (IC) she might take it personally.  She wanted to know how I separated Real Life (RL) me from RP me.  She has no role play experience but is willing to learn. Crossing the gender or race divide in your role play can be an interesting experience and enrich your character as well as add more role play to it.  Depending on the type of role play sim you are in, this may or may not be possible.  Gorean role play is one that I can think of where these type of changes would not be possible.  However, in a free form role play, anything is possible just as long as you write it and treat it as such.
